Some Reasons behind Bleeding Gums

When you see your gums bleeding while you brush, you may find it pretty alarming for you. There can be many reasons for the bleeding gums. While it is pretty important to visit your dentist as soon as you see your gums bleed, it is also very important to know about the possible reasons for bleeding gums.

Gingivitis

The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. This condition is caused by tartar which is the hardened form of plaque deposited at the gum line. This tartar irritates the gums and cause infection in the gum tissues. This infection is what we call gingivitis. Among many other symptoms of gingivitis, bleeding of gums is the one that appears first. Other symptoms include red gums, swelling and tenderness. Good news is that you can halt and get rid of this infection with the help of oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

Medications

Your gums may bleed due to the use of certain medications. There are certain blood’s thinning medicines which can result in the bleeding of gum even if you brush your tooth using the normal pressure. While it is not the big problem you need to worry about, you need to discuss about these medications with your dentist.

New routine of flossing

Changing the flossing routine is another factor which can result in bleeding of gums. For instance, you haven’t remembered about flossing for a few days and then you start flossing frequently. This sudden change in routine can lead to bleeding of gums. It is not something to worry about as this bleeding goes away in a week.

New toothbrush

You have been using a soft-bristled toothbrush and then you realized that it doesn’t work well for you. You may change your mind and switch to the use of toothbrush with hard bristles. This change might work for you in terms of removal of plaque but hard bristles can lead to the gum bleeding due to the abrasiveness they have.

Pregnancy gingivitis

Last but not the least, the gums can also bleed during pregnancy due to a specific condition called pregnancy gingivitis. This kind of gingivitis occurs due to hormonal changes in the body. Due to this hormonal change, the body changes the way it reacts to bacterial attack. As a result, the gingivitis occurs. According to dental professionals at ADA, this type of gingivitis should go away after the pregnancy. Nevertheless, you should take care of your oral health during pregnancy to make sure that stay of gingivitis remains temporary.

Although bleeding of gums may not be serious in a number of cases, there are many cases in which it can turn out to be something quite serious for health. There, you have to make sure that you are taking good care of your oral hygiene and visiting your dentist every now and then.
